Lotus Turbo Challenge
by Gremlin Graphics Software Ltd
The Lotus series is one of the most popular racing game series in the history of the computer games, and I remember playing it back when Need for Speed, which is leading the business today, was not even in development. The Lotus cars in the game were powerful, classy and the graphics look good for early 90s. There were a total of 32 different tracks in Turbo Challenge and I remember the multi-player mode in split-screen was really fun and challenging. The tracks consisted of hills, downhills, road blocks and the player had to even visit the pit stop to refuel, which was really smart and realistic.
This driving game has all the speed and time-pressured thrills of Road Rash, only now you're in a souped-up car trying to beat each different course in the allotted time. You can't crash, but go too slow and you won't make it to the checkpoint in time. Eight serpentine courses in all, with four to nine checkpoints per course, and 12 different Lotus cars to choose from. Options include password, gear selection (automatic or manual), and one or two player mode with split screen. The scaling and speed are phenomenal; the challenge level is tough.
The sound effects overall do not match the great graphics, though there is one nice effect: pressing the "C" button will induce a "YEEEEEE HAA!" from your driver.
