The Star Control series is a trilogy of computer games with a cult following. Based around a space combat game modeled after Spacewar, each of the three games adds to this a strategic or adventure game.

The first of the series, Star Control: Famous Battles of the Ur-Quan Conflict, featured the basic Spacewar-style melee combat (as it was called, even though the ships actually fired projectile weapons at each other) engine as well as a strategic game with a three-dimensional cluster of stars as the terrain. There was no real story component to the game, aside from a cursory background story explaining the existence of two alliances of alien races at war, the Alliance of Free Stars and the Hierarchy of Battle Thralls. However, the main attraction to this game was the well thought-out ship design, resulting in a highly effective balance between the two sides.

As in the later games from Star Control series, the various races' ships have widely differing appearances and abilities. The ships' sizes, maneuverability, and speed vary. In addition, each ship has a distinct main weapon and secondary ability. For instance, the Ur-Quan Dreadnought has a powerful main gun and the ability to launch independent fighters; while the Mmrnmhrm Transformer has the ability to change between two forms, one with a short-range laser as its main weapon and the other with long-range guided missiles.

Take a trip to the deadly outer reaches of space in the 27th century. Command one of 14 superb starships, each with unique maneuvering, weapons, and armor, as you try to save humanity from a tyrant's rule. Your mission sounds simple enough. Join up with the Alliance of Free Stars to take on the forces of the evil Ur-Quan Hierarchy. The fate of mankind rests in your hands, though, so you'll have to bring an extra helping of courage for this deadly affair. Boasting incredible 3D graphics, Star Control is the first-ever 12-megabit game, and it uses the capacity to bring you 15 detailed scenarios. Awesome sound effects and music make this a great game for sci-fi fans.

There is a good team called the Alliance and a bad team called the Ur-Quan Hierarchy, you must decide which team you want to be and battle it out in many missions which each have a small story behind them (some missions are called invasion earth etc.). They did put a bit of effort into writing little intro's to each mission which was quite good.

The game is designed so that you can ease into play, familiarizing yourself with menus, options and player controls. The Alliance and Hierarchy each possess different types of warships. Each vessel has its own maneuvering and firing characteristics, plus a unique special power that you can employ when circumstances dictate.

The ships are all well designed and have many colors to them, the animation of weapons is great and the view go's in and out depending on how close you are to your enemy, you actually get a feeling like you are in space when playing sometimes.

The sound is actually very good. Star Control really does have good clear sound F/x. all the laser blasts and Nukes sound really good, also there is a couple of voice clips in this game and they sound superb.
