Danny's parents are brilliant scientists who have long been trying to catch ghosts and prove to everyone the truth of their existence. Jack and Maddy have built a huge device that calculates ghosts throughout their small town. This same device is also capable of keeping the ghosts inside. Their wayward son accidentally breaks an important part of the machine, causing it to give him the ability to turn into a ghost.

Back in his normal state, Danny decided not to tell anyone about his disembodied incarnation. However, a machine malfunction caused the portals to activate. Ghosts could sneak into the human world and interact with their surroundings, but no one could touch them themselves. The first evil spirit died a virgin and decided to make up for it by kidnapping Danny's classmate. The boy realizes only he can save the girl and the whole town from the sudden appearance of ghosts.
