While it “officially” got shut down recently, Scarlet Blade can still be played and there are some servers still out there. Sold as a more “mature themed” style of MMORPG. There were a lot of eyes on Scarlet Blade and let me tell you those eyes were not looking at the level design.
A Couple Of Huge Features
Let’s get the obvious out of the way right off the bat. Boobs!!!! That is what the developers were talking about when they classed Scarlet Blade as a mature themed MMORPG. The character designs in this game are great if you are a horny teenager. However, the way that there is also a pair of big boobs on display with 90 percent of the all-female cast. Or there is a lot of booties thanks to 99.99 percent of the characters wearing a thong! This has been chosen clearly to drum up interest and it did actually work initially, but in a day and age where female empowerment is praised. Trying to get a game that features a ton of scantily clad out of proportion female characters is a hard sell. I personally am not offended by character designs like this, but I have not played an MMORPG that had as much focus on sex appeal as this one does.
The way the game portrays women actually takes away from the fact that the world which is created here is pretty cool. It has a real Cyberpunk style to it and I think that the best way I can describe it is as a cross between Final Fantasy VII and Final Fantasy XV. Unfortunately, your eyes are very rarely drawn to the locations due to all of the scantily (if they are lucky) clad women on display.
What About Class?
Class in Scarlet Blade? Well, that is not the kind of class I am talking about. Scarlet Blade has two different races and then there are six classes to consider. Everything is very simplified in Scarlet Blade and that is most evident in the skill system as there are only four for you to take on! When you pick from one of the two races and start putting together your character, you can tell that presentation was their main goal. In terms of abilities, there really are not a whole lot here and I once read a review that said there was not enough to differentiate the classes and after spending some time with the game I would have to agree with that.
What About The Gameplay?
Scarlet Blade plays things very, very safe. The combat is completely over the top and a battle can look like something out of an Avengers movie. The thing is this is all done to show off the games character models. The combat to be fair is not all that bad and it is very easy to get to grips with. However, taking on quests fighting other players, doing jobs for NPC’s and so on never really feels all that exciting.
The gameplay of Scarlet Blade is not bad at all, but there is just nothing really new here to grab your attention and keep you playing. One thing I will give the game credit for was that its free to play mechanics were more than fair and you can actually see most of what the game has without having to worry about being hustled out of a few bucks here and there for it.
I have to be honest and say that the enjoyment you are going to get from Scarlet Blade is all down to if you like games with large boobs and tiny thongs. That is clearly what was chosen to be the game’s biggest selling point and that is ultimately what led to the game not catching on as it could have. I do like the over the top combat, but I do not think I needed huge bouncing boobs to make it enjoyable. I am no prude by any means, but Scarlet Blade went to style over substance and there is just not enough to keep it interesting.
