SimCity 3000 - World Edition
SimCity 3000 - World Edition or as it is also known, Sim City 3000 – Unlimited is an updated version of the already amazing SimCity 3000. Think of it as an extended or even game of the year version of SimCity 3000 and you are on the right track to knowing what this game is about.
Before we talk about what makes the World Edition the version of the game you want to play. We need to look at what made SimCity 3000 a leap from SimCity 2000. Well, it pretty much expands upon everything 2000 did in every way you could imagine. Bigger, better and more in-depth in pretty much every way you could imagine.
One thing that needs special attention is the way you have to deal with waste management. This may not sound like much, but you need to take care of your garbage! Another thing that was expanded was dealing with neighboring cities, you can broker deals with other mayors which can be better for your bottom line and the citizens of your city as well.
There are many ways to make extra money, such as working business deals. For example, if you allow a prison to be built in your city, you can make money from it. There are many ways that you can make money in SimCity 3000 - World Edition, but you have to walk the fine line of not making your citizens mad!
What Is New In The World Edition?
It is pretty amazing just how much extra content was packed into SimCity 3000 - World Edition. While you can just build a city and see how far you can take it. This World Edition added in a bunch of scenarios that you can play with and test your city management skills with. There are hundreds of new buildings added to the game with Asian and European architecture coming to the series for the very first time. These help you give your city a bit more dynamic flair.
Many new landmarks have been added which are always fun to add. You have a lot of ways you can tinker with the terrain. I liked the ability to have these epic looking rolling hills, but things like snow and even a desert can be added to your city. There are some new disasters that can happen. My favorite has to be the plague of locusts! There is also falling space junk, a whirlpool and a toxic gas cloud to deal with.
I already thought that SimCity 3000 was a great game. SimCity 3000 - World Edition though is even better. They have not just added a couple of things here. This is like a full-on expansion and they stuff that they have added to the game actually makes it a better overall game. From the extra scenarios that you can try and complete to the tons of new items that you can put into your city.
- You have a lot of things to juggle
- The new disasters are cool
- Plenty of new scenarios to try and beat
- There are hundreds of new things added
- It is the best version of SimCity 3000
- It can be hard to get into at first
- You will probably end up using a money cheat!
Megalomaniacs everywhere will rejoice in this upgraded version of SimCity 3000. Despite the undoubted brilliance of the original (it scored 84 per cent in review), there was always that nagging thought: 'Yeah, OK, but once my city's up and running, what else can I do?'
Now the answer is: plenty. For starters, there's the Building Architect, where you have free rein to design anything from a bungalow to a ziggurat for use in the game. In addition, Maxis has provided different city styles - at the press of a button, you can convert your city into an Oriental paradise, or a European stadt complete with windmills and extra landmarks, such as Helsinki Cathedral. Also, terrain can be freely edited before you build your city, and there are landscape options (such as desert or arctic) with different trees.
There's a choice of mission-based scenarios (such as recovering from a nuclear disaster), and even the option to write your own scripts with the Scenario Creator (be warned, though, it's complicated) and share them with friends over the Net. For those despots - sorry, Mayors - with a nihilistic streak there are four new disasters: Toxic Cloud, Whirlpool, Plague of Locusts and Space Junk (my favourite). There's even a Snapshot option so that you can commemorate the destruction of your Sims in a photo album.
If all this sounds like heaven, here's the bad news: if you already own SimCity 3000, you're going to have to buy the game again to enjoy all the new features (although the Building Architect is downloadable from the official website). At present, there is no sign of an upgrade pack for existing users, and World Edition appears to be aimed principally at new players. But who wants to shell out twice for the same game? It leaves me with a sour taste, and many other loyal fans will probably feel the same.
